Auntie Em

Well today is in a word.........WINDY!  Seriously windy and when a local says it is windy.....believe it.   How do you qualify truly windy in the birthplace of aviation?

1.  They let the kids out of school early because the roads on the soundside and causeway are starting to get water from the sound

2. Employees who live in Manteo or Currituck or anywhere that makes them have to go across a bridge to get  home have to leave work early

3.  You have to HOLD ON to the door to get it  open and get it closed

4.  The water in the toilets is moving all by itself (really!)

5. The house you are in is rockin and rollin

6.  Duck Road has overwash

7.  Colington Road has overwash

8.  The ferries stop running

9.  It is loud............really loud

10. Signs get blown away or torn apart

The pictures below are of the Village at Nags Head soundside access.  Note that there are waves in some photos--and this is not the ocean!

Hey......this is a small price to pay for living and working in paradise.

Seriously, been down there once and loved it! Want to come down again soon for a few days. Does anyone have an idea where a *very* inexpensive, clean motel would be? Gonna drive this time. egh... flew from Philly last time cuz i was too scared of driving over/under the water... will bite the bullet this time.

Even a bad weather day is a good day on the Outer Banks!

Nice motels......not too expensive.....there are some but I need a few more details like what area do you want to be in (Nags Head, Corolla, Kitty Hawk?) and what type of room you need......is it for a couple or for couple with a child or children?

Many of the vacation homes allow 3 night rentals and that might be a less expensive way to go, since you will have a full kitchen and do not have to eat out.   If you have some flexibility on the area, for example you are happy to stay on the sound side of the island or even a few blocks away from the ocean, that will also help with the costs.  During the summer months, when all the hotels have peak rates, you honestly might pay less by renting a home.......look at the websites for those offers.

Another suggestion would be a Bed and Breakfast because, hey, breakfast is included and some of them also have flexibility with rates.

I used to work for a major hotel chain and one thing I learned was you always CALL the hotel (or the B & B or the vacation rental company for that matter) directly and ask (politely) for a discount if one is not posted.  Never hurts to ask.
