You Will Catch More Flies With Honey!
Day in and Day out we work in the field of "Customer Service". Have you ever stopped and thought about how you were treated, or better yet, how you treated the customer service rep when the shoe was on the other foot and YOU were the customer? I had this opportunity just this past weekend, and not just once, but twice.
While paying bills on my most recent days off - isn't that your favorite past time for your days off - I realized I had been overcharged from two separate companies - one a utility company and the other a catalogs order return. I placed a call to both companies and, while it did take about an hour of my day off, both companies agreed to credit the amount in question, AND were apologetic about the situation.
You may be asking at this point, "How the heck did she do that with BOTH companies." The answer is simple - PLAY NICE. I was appreciative when asking for help and very patient while the rep from both companies researched the situation. I don't know about you, but I am always more willing to help someone out when they are nice, and less likely when someone is kicking and screaming in my face. Those two reps did not make the mistake on my invoice and billing, they were there to help, and they did.
My boss told me not too long ago, during a software challenge we were trying to get resolved "You'll catch more flies with honey". When she told me that I thought "yeah right, I'm going to blast these people, I'm over it!" But the more I thought about it the more it made sense and I realized it just goes back to the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Until next time...

Sound's like a line from "Forest Gump" but my mother always said "You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar". It is so true. Life is too short. Be nice to people and give them a chance to resolve the issue. 9 times out of 10 you will get much better service. 30 years at the PO showed me that while we gave everyone good service the really nice people got the extra effort when it counted and we were glad to do it. The sourpuss got help but with a grudge.
What's more you don't have to have a complaint or problem to be nice. Say hi to the clerks in the grocery store or the Quick Snack, smile at the coffee shop. You never know when you may want their help.
Oh yeah, don't yell at your elected officials either. They also respond to a smile and logical argument or statement of your interests goes a lot farther then telling them how stupid they are, even if that's what you really think.
